Alpines Description

Alpines are a varied group of naturally compact plants suited to rock gardens, stone troughs, gravel beds, walls and small containers. Depending on the selection, they may provide neat evergreen cushions, spreading foliage or colourful seasonal flowers, often from a plant that occupies very little space. Most grow best in an open, bright position with sharply drained soil or gritty compost. Good drainage is especially important in Ireland, where prolonged winter rain can cause more damage than cold weather. Plant with the crown slightly raised and avoid surrounding it with rich, moisture-holding compost. The exact appearance, flowering time and mature spread will depend on the variety supplied, so combine several types for a longer and more varied display.
