Allium cepa ‘Guardsman’ Description

Allium cepa ‘Guardsman’ is a British-bred bunching onion valued for its strong roots, upright foliage and long, straight white stems. It remains slow to form a bulb, allowing the plants to retain the slender shape and mild flavour wanted from a salad onion. Crops can be ready approximately ten weeks after sowing under favourable conditions. Sow directly into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, using short rows every few weeks for a steady supply through summer and autumn. Keep the soil evenly moist during dry periods to prevent the stems becoming tough or excessively strong in flavour. Harvest plants individually once they reach the preferred thickness, pulling the whole onion for use in salads, garnishes, soups and stir-fries.
