Acer palmatum ‘Sherwood Flame’ is a large, spreading shrub or small tree with a rounded crown, growing up to 5m tall and wide. Its dark purple, deeply cut leaves retain their colour through summer before glowing crimson in autumn. Small red flowers appear in April and May, followed by winged red fruits. Low maintenance and striking, it makes an impressive feature in Irish planting schemes.
